What Are Terpenes?

If you've smelled cannabis or hemp, you know its grassy, earthy scent. The complex aroma almost reminds of sweet hay on a warm summer day. Some enjoy its natural soothing scent, while others think it's a bit too distinct. Either way, there is a special type of compound that gives the smell and flavor to cannabis plants and flowers. That compound is called terpene, and it's there for an evolutionary reason. Let's dig into it!

What are terpenes?

Have you ever thought about why some plants and flowers in nature have such a strong scent? It's not because they want to fragrance your living room (even though that's appreciated!). Instead, it's because the smell is protecting them by repelling predators and luring pollinators. What creates the scent and taste are the terpenes, and they've been evolutionarily developed by factors including climate, weather, age and maturation, fertilizers, soil type, and even the time of day.

Terpenes in the cannabis plant

Over 100 terpenes have been discovered in the cannabis plant, and every one of them is a unique type and compound. The thing is, the terpenes don't seem to only give the aroma, but also have different properties, meaning that different terpenes seem to have different effects on us.

Are there terpenes in MANTLE’s CBD oil? And what is the difference between isolate and broad spectrum CBD?

Some brands remove all the terpenes when they extract the CBD because of the distinct flavor and smell. Especially flavored CBD have removed a lot (or all) of the terpenes, to exchange them for essential oils or artificial flavors and scents. When you only have CBD in your CBD oil and none of the terpenes, the product is called an isolate CBD oil.

At MANTLE, we keep all the natural terpenes because of their properties. CBD and terpenes together create something called an entourage effect, which we want to have. Hence, our oil is not an isolate but a broad spectrum CBD oil. But you need to be careful when extracting, because the terpenes are very sensitive. After we’ve gently cold extracted the best leaves of the hemp plant, we want to remove the psychoactive cannabinoid THC (read more here about CBD vs. THC). But before we do so, we temporarily take the terpenes out; otherwise they'll get harmed in the process. After the THC is removed, we put the terpenes back in there.

Let’s talk about pores and how to minimise their appearance

Since the dawn of skincare, pores and how to refine them have been the talk of the town. Many of us even googled how to get rid of them when we were young – clearly not understanding that pores are permanent and vital. Blackheads and impurities however, are not. There are many treatments targeted towards minimising the appearance of pores, from acids like BHA, lactic and glycolic to mechanical exfoliators, pore strips (yikes) and the classic clay mask. Clay masks have been around forever, and while effective for some, they tend to be quite drying, exacerbating the problem. When we dry our skin out, our sebum production tends to increase and excess sebum can lead to clogged pores. It can quickly turn into an inconvenient cycle, and we now know that keeping skin hydrated and maintaining a healthy barrier is essential to achieving a clearer complexion.

The Green Mask is designed to be used once or twice a week. Apply a rich layer to the face, neck or wherever you feel you need it, let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water using massaging motions. Don’t expect that tight, dry feeling, because you won’t find it here. Instead, your skin should feel comfortable during the entire process, and incredibly clean and smooth after.
